RAMALLAH, West Bank: The Palestinian President said on Tuesday that he hopes the upcoming Mideast conference in France will set a timetable to end settlements, as Israel advances plans for thousands of new homes in parts of Jerusalem claimed by the Palestinians, despite the recent UN Security Council resolution condemning construction there.

The developments came just days after the United States broke with past practice and allowed the UN Security Council to condemn Israeli settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem as a "flagrant violation" of international law.

Mahmoud Abbas'' comments early Tuesday morning were his first public remarks since the UN vote.

"The decision lays the foundation for any future serious negotiation ... and it paves the way for the international peace conference slated to be held in Paris next month and we hope this conference comes up with a mechanism and timetable to end the occupation," Abbas told a meeting of his Fatah party. "The (resolution) proves that the world rejects the settlements, as they are illegal, in our occupied land including East Jerusalem."

On January 15, days before President Barack Obama leaves office, France is expected to host a Mideast conference where dozens of countries may endorse an international framework for peace between Israel and the Palestinians. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vehemently opposes such activity, saying it undermines the negotiating process.

LONDON: British Prime Minister Theresa May is expected to be the first foreign leader to meet US President Donald Trump with plans being drafted for her to fly out to Washington next week, a media report said on Saturday.

May is likely to hold her talks with the new US President in the Oval Office on Thursday on what is likely to be a two-day visit to Washington.

"Mrs May hopes to fly out to Washington DC on Thursday - much earlier than previously thought. The visit has been brought forward after Steve Bannon, Mr Trump's chief strategist, reached out to appeal for an early trip," according to 'The Daily Telegraph' newspaper, which quoted government sources.

The plans have been secretly worked up over the last week, with officials across UK government corridors involved in the final 48 hours before the inauguration of Trump on Friday.

The new US administration has expressed an interest in reviving the close relationship enjoyed by former US President Ronald Reagan and former British PM Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s.

"They are really, really keen to capture the Reagan- Thatcher idea: A new populist in the White House and a strong woman in Number 10. They want to rekindle that as soon as possible," a government source told the newspaper.

India focused on Chabahar as Japan reiterates commitment to port project

BEIJING: Japan and India are finally moving to fructify their partnership for development of the Chabahar port in Iran with Tokyo committing investment to help improve Afghanistan's access to the port.

Afghanistan confirmed Japan's pledge to develop access for Chabahar after a visit last week by Japan's state minister for foreign affairs Kentaro Sonoura. India, Iran and Afghanistan signed a trilateral agreement last year in May for establishing transport and transit corridors for the strategically located port in Iran.

"This is significant as it reiterates Japan's interest in the Chabahar project and also its support to it," India's ambassador to Afghanistan Manpreet Vohra told TOI.

PM Narendra Modi and his counterpart Shinzo Abe last year discussed prospects for cooperation between India and Japan for promoting peace and prosperity in South Asia and neighbouring region through both bilateral and trilateral cooperation. Indian and Japanese officials are together working out details for development of infrastructure and connectivity for Chabahar.

Japan's interest in Chabahar is important for India as it can help New Delhi in ensuring timebound implementation of its commitment to develop the Iranian port, seen as a counterbalance to the China's Gwadar port barely 75 km away in Pakistan.
